Tandem Drifting: How Chase-Style Drift Games Actually Work

Tandem drifting - following another car through a drift in close formation - is one of the harder drift game modes to get right, but also one of the most satisfying once it clicks.

The lead car sets the line

In most tandem modes, your job is to mirror the lead car's line as closely as possible while maintaining your own drift angle - you're not racing them, you're shadowing them.

Distance matters more than angle here

Scoring in tandem modes usually rewards staying close without contact more than it rewards a perfect angle on its own.

Reacting late is normal

Because you're following, your inputs will always lag slightly behind the lead car's - the skill is minimizing that lag, not eliminating it entirely.

Start with a slower lead car

If a game offers difficulty settings, practicing tandem runs against a slower AI lead first builds the timing you'll need before chasing faster ones.

It's a genuinely different skill from solo drifting, and worth a dedicated practice session if the genre appeals to you.
